Culebrilla ciega / Iberian worm lizard

ciega2Blanus cinereus: Reptil, endémico de la península ibérica, de morfología similar a una lombriz, adaptado estrictamente a la vida subterránea, especializado en la construcción de túneles y la localización de presas bajo tierra. Sus hábitos estrictamente subterráneos hacen que su presencia sea difícil de detectar, por lo que es raro verla. Inofensiva. Especie no amenazada. Categoría: preocupación menor.

A reptile endemic to the Iberian Peninsula with morphology similar to an earthworm, strictly adapted to a subterranean life and specialised in building tunnels and locating prey under the ground. Its strictly subterranean habits make its presence difficult to detect and, therefore, it is seldom seen. Harmless. This species in not threatened. Category: least concern.

Jabali / Eurasian wild pig

jabali2Sus scrofa: Mamífero de tamaño mediano, de comportamiento muy sociable, caracterizado por su grande y alargada cabeza. Su mala vista es compensada con un importante desarrollo del olfato, que le permite detectar alimento, como trufas o vegetales y animales bajo tierra, o incluso enemigos a más de 100 metros de distancia. El oído esta también muy desarrollado y puede captar sonidos imperceptibles para el ser humano. Categoría IUCN España (2006): preocupación menor.

A médium-sized european mammal, with very sociable behaviour, characterised by its large elongated head. Its bad sight is offset by highly-developed sense of smell, which allows it to detect food, such as truffles or vegetables and animals, under the ground and it can even smell enemies more than 100 meters away. Its hearing is also very highly developed and it can capture sounds that are imperceptible ti the human ear. IUCN Spain (2006): least concern.

Gato montés / Wild cat

gato2Felis sylvestris: Felino muy similar al gato doméstico, algo más grande y de cola más ancha. Lo podemos encontrar en el bosque y lugares poco degradados alejados de los nucleos urbanos, en Navacerrada lo podemos encontrar entre el pinar de la Barranca y los Almochones. De carácter esquivo y solitario, territorial, vespertino y nocturno, lo que dificulta su observación. Incluido en el CNEA como especie “de interés especial”.

A feline that is very similar to the domestic cat, although it is slightly larger and has a wider tail. We can find it in woodland and in relatively untouched places, far from urban areas. In navacerrada, we can find it from the la Barranca pine wood to los Almochones. Shy and solitary, territorial, crepuscular and nocturnal, making it difficult to see. Included in the CNEA as a species “of special interest”.

Corzo / European roe deer

corzo2Capreolus capreolus: Pequeño ungulado, denominado “el duende del bosque”, de carácter predominantemente forestal. Sus habitos son crepusculares, por lo que rara vez se le ve por el dia. Su reducido volumen estomacal, le obliga a comer en pequeños intervalos seguidos de un periodo de reposo. Los machos mudan su cuerna en época invernal. Especie de especial interés cinegético. Categoría España IUCN (2006): preocupación menor.

A small ungulate, often called the “elf of the Woods”, it prefers to live the forest. It is mainly active in the twilight and, therefore, is seldom seen during the day. Its small stomach forces it to each at short intervals followed by a rest period. The bucks lose their antlers and regrow them in winter. The species is of special hunting interest. IUCN category (2006) in Spain: least concern.

Ardilla roja / Eurasian red squirrel

ardilla2Sciurus vulgaris: Ardilla caracterizada por su pelaje de color rojizo y los penachos de pelos que presenta en las orejas en la época invernal. Existen 6 subespecies descritas, la presente en esta zona es la de mayor tamaño S. v. infuscatus. Entierra los frutos otoñales a modo de despensa, algunos quedan olvidados posibilitando que crezca un nuevo árbol por lo que se la ha llamado “el plantador de árboles”.

A Squirrel characterised by its reddish coat and the tufts of hair on its cars in the winter. Six subspecies have been described. The one in the area is the larges, S.v. infuscatus. It makes a pantry by burying autumn fruits, some of which are forgotten and thus allow new trees to grow. For this reason, it has been called the “tree planter”.

Mariposa isabelina / Spanish moon moth

mariposa2Graellsia isabelae: Especie de hábitos nocturnos que no se alimentan en su estado adulto (8dias), puede observarse desde abril hasta junio, de mediados de mayo hasta finales de Julio se pueden observar las orugas, que se alimentan, exclusivamente, de acículas de Pinus sylvestris y Pinus nigra. G isabelae es una especie vulnerable debido a la regresión de su hábitat, a la que podemos encontrar en el pinar de la Barranca.

A species with nocturnal habits, it does not feed in its adult phase (8days) and may be seen from April to June. From mid-may to the end of july, we can see the caterpillars, which feed exclusively on the needles of Pinus Sylvestris and Pinus Negra. G Isabelae is a vulnerable species due to decline in its habitat. We can find it in the La Barranca pine wood.

Rabilargo / Azure-winged Magpie

rabilargo2Cyanopica cyana: Lo encontramos en dehesas y pinares, a menudo en zonas con escaso arbolado para poder comer del suelo. Suele observarse en grupos familiares. Es característico el azul del dorso. Cuando quiere dar la voz de alarma hace un sonido retumbante que pone alerta a toda la familia. Se alimenta principalmente de bayas e insectos, aunque no rechaza restos de comida de los parques.

We find it in “dehesas” (grasslands typical of Spain) and pine Woods, often in áreas where there are few tres, allowing it to feed on the ground. It is usually seen in family groups. Its blue back is characteristic. When it wants to raise the alarm, it makes a resonant sound that places the whole family on the alert. Its feeds mainly on berries and insects, although it does not say no to food leftovers in parks.

Piquituerto común / Red crossbill

piquituerto2Loxia curvirostra: Hace nido a gran altura, en bosques normalmente de coníferas. Es característico su pico, del cual su parte inferior y superior no encajan perfectamente, a ahí su nombre común. Podemos encontrar tanto con coloraciones rojas como amarillentas. Suelen tener un cuello robusto y una cabeza grande que junto con  la forma de su pico, les permite abrir piñas con facilidad y extraer los piñones.

It builds its nest very high up, usually in conifer Woods. Its beak is characteristic, sience the lower and upper parts do not fit perfectly together, giving rise to its common name. We can find it in both reds and yellows. It usually has a strong neck and a large head, which, together with the shape of its beak, allow it to easily open pinecones and extract the pine-nuts.

Pinzón vulgar / Chaffinch

pinzon-vulgar2Fringilla coelebs: Lo podemos encontrar tanto en zona de bosque como en parques y jardines, incluso en zonas más secas. El nido lo construye entre horquillas de ramas, disimulándolo después con musgos. La morfología es muy similar al gorrión común, pero tiene un colorido más interesante: pecho rojizo y cabeza y nuca gris azulada. También se le destacan las manchas blancas de las alas.

We can find it both in Woodland and in parks and gardens, including drier areas. It builds its nest in forked branches and then camouflages it with moss. Its morphology is very similar to that of the House Sparrow but its colouring is more interesting: reddish breast and blue-grey crown and nape. The white bars on its wings are also conspicuous.

Pico picapinos / Great spotted woodpecker

pico-picapinos2Dendrocopos major: Lo podremos encontrar en pinar y en dehesa pero también en plantaciones artificiales tipo chopera. A menudo, antes de verlo, ya lo estamos oyendo a gran distancia debido al sonido que hace al picar los troncos. Si encontramos un agujero en un árbol con una entrada circular casi perfecta de unos 5 o 6cm., es probable que hayamos descubierto un nido de pico picapinos.

We can find it in pine Woods and “dehesa” (grassland typical of Spain) but also in artificial plantations, such as poplar groves. Often, before we see it, we can hear it at a great distance due to the sound it makes pecking the trunks. If we find a hole in tree of around 5 or 6 cm, with an almost perfectly round entrance, it is likely that we have found the nest of a great spotted woodpecker.

Herrerillo capuchino / Crested tit

herrerillo-capuchinoParus cristatus: De la misma familia a la que pertenecen los carboneros, los podemos encontrar en bandas juntos. Anida en tocones o trancos en descomposición. Se le suele ver comiendo en el suelo o en ramas bajas. Es muy característica su cresta. Son aves de pico corto, rechonchos. Son confiados y para observarles solo hay que quedarse quieto y tener un poco de paciencia.

Belonging to the same family as the great tit and the coal tit, we can find them together in flocks. They nest in decomposing tree stumps or trunks. They usually feed on the ground or on low branches. Their crest is very characteristic. They are stocky birds with a short beak. They are trusting and, to watch them, we only need to keep still have a little patience.

Carbonero garrapinos / Coal tit

carbonero-garrapinos2Parus ater: Es una especie con amplia distribución en nuestra sierra. La encontramos sobre todo en los pinares (coníferas) de la Barranca. Es un poco más pequeño que su primo, el Carbonero común, alcanzando un tamaño máximo de unos 11cm. Se le podrá observar ocupando los nidos artificiales que se colocaron por el ICONA en la década de los 70. Se alimenta de semillas y pequeños insectos.

This species is widespread in our Sierra. We find it primarily in the pine woods (conifers) of the Barranca. It is a little smaller than its cousin the great tit, reaching a maximum size of around 11 cm. it can be seen occupying the artificial nests that the ICONA (National Nature Conservation Institute) installed in the seventies. It feeds on seeds and small insects.

Águila calzada / Booted Eagle

aguila-calzada2Hieraaetus pennatus: Aunque en verano es relativamente fácil verla en nuestros pinares (porque anida en ellos), es un ave que ha estado en una situación delicada de conservación. Gracias al esfuerzo de muchas Organizaciones no gubernamentales e Instituciones, parece que la población se está recuperando. Tiene dos fases bien diferenciadas: una oscura y otra blanca. Se puede confundir con un ratonero. Cuando caza hace unos picados espectaculares.

Although it is quite easy to see in our pinewoods (because that is where it nests), it is a bird with a delicate conservation status. Thanks to the efforts of many institutions and non-governmental organisations, the population appears to be recovering. It has two clearly distinguishable morphs: one dark and one pale. It can be confused with a buzzard. When hunting, it makes spectacular dives.

Acebo/Holly

acebo2Ilex aquifolium:  Arbusto con gran tradición en la decoración navideña, lo que a provocado la reducción de poblaciones en su hábitat natural. Además de su valor decorativo destacan sus aplicaciones medicinales y la toxicidad de sus frutos. Es típico del sotobosque del Pino Albar, por lo que podemos encontrarlo junto a él en el Valle de la Barranca. Especie protegida, catalogada como “Sensible a la alteración de su hábitat”

Traditionally used extensively in Christmas decorations, which has led to a population reduction in its natural habitat. In addition to its decorative value, its medicinal applications and the toxicity of its fruits may be highlighted. It is typical of the undergrowth on Scots Pine sites and, therefore, we can find it with this tree in the La Barranca Valley. It is a protected species catalogued as “Sensitive to habitat changes”.

Rosal silvestre /Escaramujo/Dog Rose

escaramujo2Rosa canina:  Arbusto de altura variable, entre 1 y 3m, de tallos arqueados y espinosos. El escaramujo tiene diversas propiedades medicinales digestivas, antiinflamatorias, laxantes, vitamínicas, etc. Además puede utilizarse en la cocina para la preparación de infusiones, mermeladas y gelatinas. En Navacerrada podemos encontrarlo casi en cualquier ecosistema debido a su amplitud ecológica, desde el sotobosque de pinares y robledales hasta formando setos junto a los caminos.

A shrub which varies between 1 and 3m in height, with arched thorny stems. The Dog Rose has a number of medicinal properties: digestive, anti-inflammatory, laxative, it contains vitamins, etc. Furthermore, it can be used in the kitchen to prepare teas, jams and jellies. In Navacerrada, we can find it in almost any ecosystem given its ecological breadth, ranging from the pine and oak wood undergrowth to forming roadside hedges.

 Gayuba/Common Bearberry

gayuba2Arctotaphylos uva-ursi: Arbusto rastrero de pequeña altura, perenne, de hojas coriáceas; lo encontramos formando parte del sotobosque de pino albar, aunque predomina en los claros y laderas pedregosas de la cuerda de los Almorchones, donde forma grandes matas que simulan una gran alfombra verde. El nombre de «uva-ursi» alude a la afición de los osos por los frutos rojos de este arbusto. Tiene propiedades farmacológicas a nivel urinario.

A small spreading perennial shrub with leathery leaves, it can be found among the undergrowth on Scots Pine sites, although it predominates in the clearings and on the stony mountainsides of La Cuerda de los Almorchones, where it forms a large green carpet of big thickets. The name “uva-ursi” refers to the fact that bears like the red berries that this shrub produces. It has pharmacological properties for urinary complaints.

Helecho Común/Common Bracken

helecho2Pteridium aquilinum:  Es el más frecuente de los helechos debido a que es uno de los más frondosos, alcanzando hasta los 3 metros de altura lo que  impide el crecimiento de otras plantas y a su elevada resistencia al fuego. Lo encontramos en bosques umbrosos, como los pinares de la Barranca. Se trata de una planta venenosa y carcinogénica, asociada desde antiguo a diversos usos y creencias mágicas.

This is the commonest of the brackens, since it is one of the leafiest and can grow up to a height of 3m, preventing other plants from growing. Furthermore, it is also very fire resistant. We can find it in shady woods, such as the La Barranca pine woods. It is toxic and carcinogenic and, since olden times, it has been associated with a number of uses and magical beliefs.

Muérdago/European Mistletoe

muerdago2Viscum album:  El muérdago es una planta hemiparásita, que elabora su propia clorofila pero que requiere el tejido del hospedador para obtener los nutrientes necesarios para su desarrollo, las flores parasitan troncos de árboles sobre los que crece formando manojos. Existen innumerables leyendas sobre el muérdago, desde sus aplicaciones contra enfermedades,  maldad, fertilidad… hasta su poder mágico, aunque se le conoce principalmente por su valor decorativo navideño.

This is a hemi-parasitic shrub that makes its own chlorophyll but requires the tissue of the host to obtain the nourishment necessary for its development. The plants grow in bunches on the trunks of the trees from which they take their nourishment. There are innumerable legends about the mistletoe, ranging from its applications related to diseases, evil, fertility, etc. to its magic power, although it is known mainly as a Christmas decoration.

Pino silvestre/Scots Pine

pino2Pinus sylvestris: Conífera de característico tronco anaranjado, localizada entre los 1.000 y 2.000 metros (ecosistema montaña), se adapta a cualquier tipo de suelo, que presente cierta humedad. En Navacerrada esta ampliamente representado cubriendo prácticamente en su totalidad el Valle de la Barranca. Este pino, también denominado pino albar es de las coníferas más empleadas en repoblación y de porte más elegante, suministrando madera de excelente calidad.

A conifer with a characteristic orange trunk. It may be found at altitudes of between 1,000 and 2,000 metres (mountain ecosystem) and adapts to any kind of soil that has a certain amount of dampness. There are many Scots Pines in Navarraceda, covering almost the whole of the La Barranca Valley. This pine is one of the conifers that is most widely employed for repopulation purposes and one of the most elegant, providing excellent quality wood.
